A safe deposit box, also called a safety deposit box is an individually secured container, usually held within a larger safe or bank vault. Safe deposit boxes are generally located in banks, post offices or other institutions. Safe deposit boxes are used to store valuable possessions, such as gemstones, precious metals, currency, marketable securities, important documents such as wills, property deeds, and birth certificates, or computer data storage that need protection from theft, fire, flood, tampering or other reasons. In the typical arrangement, a renter pays the bank a fee for the use of the box, which can be opened only with production of an assigned key, the bank's own guard key, the proper signature, and perhaps a code of some sort. Some banks additionally use biometric dual-control security to complement the conventional security procedures.
The contents of safe deposit boxes may be seized under the legal theory of abandoned property also known as unclaimed property

If you think there is not much to using a safe deposit box beyond putting keys in locks, you are in for a surprise. The safe deposit box service may be tucked down in the basement or far corner of your bank, but in its own quiet way it is among the bank's most important offerings-- and among the most misunderstood.

While millions of Americans rent safe deposit boxes, few pay attention to questions such as who could or should have access to a safe deposit box (especially in an emergency) and how the contents of the safe deposit box are protected. About the only time people ever consider these issues is when there is a problem, and then it may be too late to prevent a loss.

To help you decide whether to use a safe deposit box, and how to use one wisely, read the following questions and answers. To keep things simple, our references to "banks" are intended to apply broadly to banks, savings institutions and credit unions.
